Nate Schiedel – New York State Wrestling Champion Cal-Mum wrestler is Division II 189 pound champion The promise of wrestling greatness was evident in Nate Schiedel early on, even as a precocious kindergartener, the desire was there. He was the young son who would pester his parents, Ed and Colleen to let him go with his older brother, Evan, to attend Evan’s Pee Wee wrestling practices. The boy had wrestling in his blood. Since those early days, it has been a wrestling journey for the Schiedel family. Nate Schiedel took the final step on his high school wrestling journey this past weekend when he climbed to the top spot on the podium at New York State Wrestling Championships. Standing proudly on top of that podium, as he claimed the Championship for Division II 189 pound weight class at the 2008 New York State Wrestling Championships. Schiedel’s Championship weekend started on Saturday morning with a first round match against John Lauro of McGann-Mercy from Section 11 (Long Island area). The match was Schiedel’s easiest of the weekend, as he would pin Lauro in 2:42. The victory against Lauro advanced Schiedel into the quarter-finals where he would be paired against Richard Dawson from Medina of Section 6 (Buffalo area). Dawson would prove to be a formidable opponent for Schiedel as Dawson’s stocky physical build was an indication of his obvious strength. Schiedel would chip away at the Medina big-man and take control the match in the 2nd period, though it was obvious that the Dawson match physically pushed Schiedel’s endurance. Waiting for Nate Schiedel, for Sunday morning’s semifinal match, would be Chris Nocchi of Waverly, Section 4 (Binghamton area). Nocchi was the only other Division II wrestler who was ranked in the states top 10 and he had to be considered Schiedel’s chief threat in the 189 pound weight class. Schiedel answered the challenge as he would wrestle his best match of the weekend. He took control of the match early on and would finish with a surprising easy 12 to 2 victory. On the opposite side of the bracket, Holland Patent’s Dan Fruscella of Section 3 (Syracuse area) would be waiting as Schiedel’s finals championship opponent. Wrestling in front of 7000+ spectators, Schiedel and Fruscella took to the mat for the right to claim New York States best. It was apparent that Fruscella and his coaches had scouted Schiedel well. Fruscella proved to be quick and resourceful as he would time and again avoid the leg riding tactics of Schiedel. Though Fruscella was good defensively, his offense was ineffective against the stronger Schiedel. Schiedel spent the major portion of the match riding on top of Fruscella, though Schiedel was unsuccessful in putting Fruscella on his back, he was effective in taking precious time off the clock. As the buzzed sounded at the conclusion of the match, you could hear the Cal-Mum fans about the arena cheer their hero, Nate Schiedel. Nate Schiedel, as always, shared his victory with those closest to him. Parents, Ed and Colleen, along with his older brother Evan, have been there every step of the way, along side Nate, on his wrestling journey. It was appropriate that Nate saved the first hugs for his family. Teammates, classmates and friends would then mob Nate as he made his way around the Blue Cross Arena. Nate took time to share a special moment with elder statesman of Cal-Mum wrestling, Bob "Bear" Pullyblank. Former coaches, CM Wrestling supporters and their wives who have watched Nate literally grow up, were there to shake his hand, give him hugs and slapped him on the back, after all they too had shared in Nate’s journey. Oh, by the way, there was one more individual I forgot to mention who unfortunately was not there but you had to know he was there in spirit, Ross "Grand Pa" Orton. I’m sure he was wearing a big smile, God bless you, Ross. Nate’s wrestling journey carries him next to Binghamton University were the Division I Bears are in the process of building a strong wrestling program. Nate Schiedel will surely be one of the cornerstones of this program. Good Luck Nate as you continue on your journey. Go Raider!

Nate Schiedel points to a State
Title You can’t help but notice it, if you have been following the exploits of Cal-Mum senior wrestler Nate Schiedel, he is on a mission. Beginning with last week’s, dominating performance at the Section V Class BBB, he followed that effort up with an even more impressive 4-pin performance at the 2008 Section V Super Sectional Tournament, capturing 1st place in the 189-pound weight class. The two-time 3rd place finisher at the NYS Wrestling Tournament is turning up the heat and he is determined to bring home to Caledonia-Mumford a New York State wrestling title, the first since Robin Scott-Parker accomplished the feat back in 1976. Nate Schiedel’s Supers weekend started Friday afternoon with a pin against Hornell’s Dylan Green in 2:42. Before the evening was finished, Schiedel would dispose of Warsaw’s Rob Selapack in 2:33. Saturday’s semi-finals match-up was against Pembroke’s Graham Jensen, Schiedel’s finals opponent from the Class BBB Tournament, the week before. Jensen would not prove as pesky this time around as Schiedel took down the Pembroke wrestler early in the match, rolled him over in a cradle and pinned him in only 54 seconds. The semi-final victory over Graham Jensen set-up Schiedel for Saturday evening’s finals against Luke Pariso of Attica. Schiedel would go right after Pariso, pressuring him from the first whistle. Schiedel’s consistent take-downs during the tournament were deflected early on in the finals match by Pariso. When Schiedel did finally catch Pariso, near the end of the 1st period, the Attica wrestler’s problem began. Schiedel began racking up the points as they wrestled through the 2nd period and into the 3rd. Pariso was turned onto his back several times in both the 2nd and 3rd periods before he was finally pinned at the 5:11 mark. Cal-Mum was also well represented at the Supers, with Tim Sullivan and Bryan Parslow both capturing 4th place. Both seniors wrestled extremely well and it was very apparent that Coach Paul "Chip" Day was very pleased with the effort of these two wrestlers. 145-pound, Tim Sullivan’s bracket put him on a collision course with #1 seeded Josh Mayville, Sullivan’s nemesis from the week before. Sullivan would decision both Josh Bowman of Lyndonville and Dave Wooley of Letchworth, setting up his semi-finals match with Mayville. Josh Mayville had wrestled Sullivan several time in the past and armed with that knowledge, he caught Sullivan attempting a take-down and countered, putting "Sully" in his back, pinning him in 5:07. The defeat sent Sullivan to the Losers bracket where he defeated Canisteo-Greenwood’s Mark Ahearn 5 to 3, moving him into the consolation-finals for 3rd place. As luck would have it, Sullivan was matched up against the weight class’ #2 seeded Matt Applebee. In a great match, Sullivan would fall in hard-fought triple over-time with the final score 2 to 1. If it was time for Tim to have his career come to an end, it was one heck of a way to finish it. Tim Sullivan, who recently entered the 100 Win Club has been a fixture for Cal-Mum wrestling for the past several years. His leadership and dedication will be sorely missed and impossible to replace. Congratulations on a great career, Tim Sullivan. Go Raider! Bryan Parslow, became the wrestler who came from out of nowhere! Who would have thought that when this wrestling season began, Bryan Parslow would be a 4th place finisher, in Section V’s Super Sectional Tournament? I’m not sure that Bryan, himself, would have dreamt it possible back then. How did Parslow accomplish this impressive feat? Two words can only describe it, heart and hard-work. Bryan Parslow went out to the wrestle the past two weeks and left everything he had on that wrestling mat. The second year wrestler battled against competitors who had years more experience and many more wrestling matches under their belts. Prior to this week’s Supers, Parslow finally broke into armdrag.com’s top six wrestlers, at #6, in Section V Division II 189-pound weight class. Tim Herman, armdrag’s webmaster, looked at his record and felt he deserved that lofty position. Following Bryan’s narrow 8-7 defeat against Kenny Landers of South Seneca, Herman may have had doubts about the placement. To his credit, Bryan Parslow took the hard road to the Consolation Finals, through the losers’ bracket. Battling all the way through the bracket, he earned the right to wrestle for 3rd place. Thought he would fall in the match, Bryan Parslow had earned competitor’s respect as well as the justification for his inclusion into the armdrag.com’s top six. It would suffice to say, that very few of the wrestlers at this past week’s Supers Tournament have come farther this year, than Bryan Parslow did. Congratulations Bryan Parslow! Go Raider! Nate Schiedel will begin his quest for a New York State Wrestling crown starting on Saturday, March 8th at Rochester’s Blue Cross Arena. With the favorable location for this year’s State Tournament, it would be great to see the Cal-Mum faithful come out and cheer Nate on. The chance to win an individual state wrestling championship does not come around very often. In Caledonia, it comes around about every 30 years or so. Don’t miss it! Go Nate Schiedel! Go Raider! Bring it Home!

Schiedel and
Gorrow are Kings of Class BBB For Nate Schiedel winning a Sectional Class crown was old hat, having won sectional class crowns the previous three years but for Tom Gorrow, this was uncharted territory for the Raiders’ 285 pound class wrestler. Having earned the weight class number one seed put the early pressure on the Raiders big man. Gorrow responded by beating Bishop Kearney’s Steve Mahoney by fall in 1:04, in the quarterfinals match before squeaking out a 3 to 1 victory over a tough Kacee Sauer of Holley. The victory over Sauer sent Gorrow into the finals where he handled Addison’s Drew Dunn to the tune of a convincing 9 to 2 decision. The win was by far the biggest of the junior’s wrestling career and was a real crowd pleaser for all the Raider fans in attendance. Nate Schiedel literally tore through the 189 pound weight class, easily pinning both of his opponents in the first two rounds. These victories were followed by a 17 to 1 dismantling of Mynderse’s Shawn Wilson in the semi-finals. Pembroke’s Graham Jensen was to feel the wrath of Schiedel in the finals as he was dominated totally, as Schiedel registered a 17 to 6 major decision. Schiedel was rewarded for his strong effort when at the conclusion of the tournament; he received the Outstanding Wrestler Award (upper weights). Tim Sullivan was looking to repeat as a Section V Class Champion and he wrestled extremely well, well enough to win in most years. Unfortunately for Tim, his opponent in the finals was state ranked Josh Mayville of Marion. Tim stood toe to toe with Mayville before finally loosing an 8 to 2 decision. Ben Anastasi supplied a pleasant surprise for Coach Paul Day when he pulled out a close 3 to 2 decision over Phil Kommer of Williamson to place 3rd in the 140 pound weight class. Senior Brian Parslow continues to improve placing 4th in the 189 pound weight class. Brian would loose his first match and was forced to fight his way back through the losers’ bracket. All five Cal-Mum wrestlers will be wrestling at the 2008 Super Sectionals that will be held at R.I.T.’s Gordon Field House this coming Friday and Saturday. As a team, Cal-Mum finished 6th with 102.5 points. The 2008 Class BBB Tournament Team Champions were the Holley Hawks with 158 points. In a dog fight for the runners up spot, Sodus’ 145 points edged out Marion and LeRoy’s 126 and 122 points respectively. Sharing the Outstanding Wrestler Award with Nate Schiedel for the lower weights was Holley’s Tim Banks. Vaughn Peterson of Sodus was recognized as the 2008 Coach of the Year. The Wellsville Team took home the Sportsmanship Award.

Red Raider Wrestling The 2007-2008 wrestling season is under way for the Red Raiders. The core group of wrestlers from last year’s team has returned with the hope of improving on last years campaign. The coaching staff of Chip Day-Varsity, Tony D’Ambra-JV and Chad Kessler-Modified are optimistic about this season. Last season with having to forfeit 4 to 5 weight classes the Raiders found themselves always wrestling at a huge disadvantage. This year with the influx of some new wrestlers this season is looking brighter. Senior Nate Schiedel will begin his quest to return to the state wrestling tournament for the third straight year. His goal for becoming Cal-Mum’s first sate champion since Robin Scott-Parker will take place at the Blue-Cross Arena in Rochester this year. Senior Tim Sullivan looks to repeat as the Class BBB champion and also qualify for the state tournament. An injury last year to Senior Nate Anastasi in the Class BBB tournament cost him a chance at the state qualifiers that he hopes to change this year. Senior Brian Walker, last years most improved wrestler, looks to finish his last year on a strong note. Come out and support these young men as they begin their journey.
