Mayor makes appointments and board lowers tax
rates The Caledonia Village Board held its annual reorganizational meeting on April 6. The board approved Mayor Joe Caluorie’s appointments and assignments for the upcoming fiscal year. After several weeks of workshops, the board also approved the 2009-2010 budget that lowers the property tax rate 11 cents per thousand to $9.25. The Livingston County News was named official newspaper for the year and the Bank of Castile and Five Star Bank were named official depositories. The village board will hold its regular meetings one time per month for the fiscal year 2009-2010 at 6:30 p.m. except for the months of July and August when meetings will begin at 4 p.m. For fiscal purposes, the board will hold a short meeting on May 29 and September 30, 2009 at 4 p.m. Chris Buckley, water and street foreman, reported that the water system should be completely switched over to the Monroe County Water system by June 1, 2009. The air stripper inside the water treatment plant located on Park Place as well as the pumps, will be dismantled and the building will be used to store equipment for the water department. The tillemetry system will remain in the building. The bid for renovating the tennis courts at Washburn Park is approximately $19 thousand. The cost to repair the courts is being equally shared between the village and Caledonia-Mumford Central School because the school’s tennis team uses the courts as its home and practice courts. Village DPW is installing a new water meter pit at the Iroquois Road mobile home park. The village provides water to residents living at the park through a water district agreement. The village’s attorney is in the process of developing a comprehensive Internet and cell phone policy for Caledonia employees who carry village-issued cell phones and other electronic devices. The board unanimously approved the $1,284,407 - 2009-2010 budget that brings down the tax rate to $9.25 per thousand of assessed value. The budget includes a general equipment reserve of $30 thousand, an unemployment reserve of $5 thousand and water equipment reserve of $11, 700. The police department expense budget is down 21 percent for the next year. DPW will purchase a new roller and a trailer and have several projects budgeted for the upcoming year including installing a new heater at the Park Place shop, insulating the building’s roof, window and door replacements, renovation of fire hall door and painting exterior of village office. Several street projects are also included in the budget. They include repairing Ellen Place and Center Street, Jersey Street reconstruction, crack/fill five lane miles of village streets, repairing sidewalks and village parking lot drain, two new light poles and refurbishing the welcome to Caledonia signs. The water department is slated for new water meters, one new value and hydrant, a new meter for the Iroquois Road mobile home park and completing the change from local water to Monroe County Water Authority. There is good news for the community’s two largest resources. Big Springs Museum and Caledonia Library will each receive $1 thousand more in funding next year for a total of $5 and $32 thousand respectively from the Village of Caledonia. The mayor reported that the second year of the village’s two-year refuse contract with LT Disposal is increasing $4 thousand from $175 to $179 thousand dollars from 2009-2010. The next village board meeting is May 5, 2009 at 6:30 p.m.
