Trustees Boscoe and Fowler cast their final vote
new trustees sworn in

Each with ten years of service to the Village of Caledonia, Trustees Diane Fowler and Steve Boscoe cast their final vote as village trustees when they voted to approve the 2008-09 budget. Boscoe says the best part of being a trustee is when the village board accomplishes something that helps people. "You never make 100 percent of the people happy. You have to look at what benefits the residents of Caledonia; you can’t get bogged down by the minority grumblers," Boscoe commented. He hopes the VB will continue to update its planning process, with the Strategic Plan serving as step one. Boscoe owns and operates Padgett Business Services, a payroll and tax service located on State Street in Caledonia.

Fowler agrees that planning is crucial. "It costs money to plan but you have to do what’s best for growth," she explained. Fowler says she found it very rewarding to visit Cal-Mum HS classrooms and talk with the students, inspiring them to become interested in their local government. She is looking forward to more time with family. She is employed as the assistant director of sales at Markin Tubing in Wyoming.

"Steve Bosco and Diane Fowler have been very dedicated board members. Some of the issues that they dealt with were time consuming and stressful, however, they gave their complete attention to the opinions of the public and after thorough discussion by both sides would render their decision. They also brought to the table a wealth of knowledge regarding zoning and planning Board issues," Mayor Joe Caluorie commented.

Trustee Steve Polo cast the lone no vote on the proposed $1,276,997 2008-09 budget. Polo took a few minutes to qualify his no vote and to assure the other trustees and residents in the audience that although he did not vote in favor of the budget, he would support the trustees as they move forward with the work of the village.

"There was a lot of good work that went into this budget. With all do respect to my colleagues, I think we can do a little bit better. If it doesn’t sit right with me, I’m not going to approve it," Polo told the board.

One of the areas of contention with Polo is money allotted in the new budget to repair the tennis courts at Washburn Park. He doesn’t support that investment and says the money could be better spent to improve the village’s infrastructure.

The board looked to the Cal-Mum School district to share half of the $15 thousand cost of resurfacing the tennis courts at Washburn Park, but says an agreement between the two could not be reached. The school uses the tennis courts for its tennis practices and matches. The superintendent of CMCS was not available for comment. Both the mayor and Trustee Polo say the total cost to renovate the tennis courts places a burden on the village budget during a time when there are several other large ticket items pending, referring to the decommissioning and hook up to Monroe County water and other projects. The village acquired the lights from the old Hamilton football field and Caluorie said he’d like to see them used to light the tennis courts and said he’d consider suggestions from the community on fundraising ideas to help with some or all of the cost of resurfacing the courts.

"I would be happy to talk with anyone who wants to "save our tennis courts," the mayor remarked.

Caledonia Recreation Director Betty McClenney presented the newly revamped swim program for this summer, which will be held at the Avon Central School pool. In addition to group swim lessons, Caledonia Recreation and the CMCS Community Education programs will combine to offer two new swim classes, lifeguard training and parent/young child swim.
