Welcome to the February "Veterans Corner" Livingston County American Legion Oratorical Contest: The Livingston County American Legion held their annual Oratorical Contest at the Matthew Cleary Post 255 in Caledonia on December 29th, 2007. Contestants are high school students who must perform an 8 to 10 minute judged oratory on the US Constitution. This year there were 3 students competing from Livingston County schools. All 3 had to give their Oratory in front of about 20 people in attendance. Susan Pratt from Avon won this years contest, she also won last years contest. Her sister Diana placed second and Josh Graves of Dansville placed third. The Livingston County American Legion has tried for years to get the local schools to respond and support this contest without much success. It may be time to start putting more effort into home schooled kids to participate. The County Legion would like to congratulate the 3 participants this year for the effort they put in to their Oratory. Judges for this contest were Joe Caluorie, mayor of the Village of Caledonia. Martha Keenan, long time member of Matthew Cleary Post Ladies Auxiliary and Peter Vogt, American Legion Member of the Dansville Daniel Goho American Legion Post. The official timekeepers were Mel Keenan and Jake Davis of the Caledonia Legion. Good luck to Susan in her next level of competition.

Cold War Veterans Tax Exemption: There has been a Cold War Veterans Property Tax Exemption brought to the County Board of Supervisors for consideration. This would give Cold War Veterans tax exemptions on a percentage of their Village, Town and County property tax only. This would not affect their school property tax. This consideration has apparently been tabled for the time being. All county Veterans should contact their County supervisors for more information on the status of this tax exemption. State Legion Officers to Visit County: On February 8th, State Officers: Legion Commander William Burnett, Auxiliary President Carol Johnson and SAL Commander Gerry Ketchum will be in Dansville for their annual visitation. The event will be held at the Daniel-Goho Post 87 American Legion, 34 Elizabeth Street. Social hour will start at 6 pm and dinner will follow at 7 pm. For reservations, call the Dansville Legion for information. VFW wants you Speak Your Piece: Advocate for Veterans health care and benefits by contacting your US Congressional representative.
