Soldiers Monument diverts large tractor trailer

New York Department of Transportation redesigned the traffic pattern around Soldiers Monument in Caledonia a few years ago in an effort to make it safer for motorists to navigate. For the most part, it has worked except that if surveyed, local motorists would like to have it back the way it was.

On Wednesday, August 20, a very long tractor trailer, including four sections, traveling from the west approached the round-about and attempted to cut it off and make a left turn on to Rt. 36 north. After several minutes of maneuvering the rig with no success, the driver apparently decided to back up and attempt to drive straight down East Avenue instead.

Several spectators watched as the long load untangled and straightened itself from the corner of North and Main Streets continued on its way. Many onlookers said at least it provided a little out of the ordinary entertainment for this small town during the dog days of summer. One of them Joan Crunden, provided the website with photos she took with her own digital camera while watching the episode.

This driver of this big rig traveling from the west with escorts decides not to attempt making it around the round about at Soldiers Monument in Caledonia. He tries to cut left to North Street, but with little success. The load is just too long to make the sharp turn. Eventually, the driver backed up and headed straight down East Avenue.
