New School Board President Jay Jones takes office The Caledonia-Mumford School Board of Education elected a new school board president, vice-president and member at the district’s annual reorganization meeting held July 10, 2007. Longstanding board member and former vice-president Jay Jones took the oath of office as president, replacing John McCreedy who retired from the Cal-Mum BOE to hold a post on the Genesee Valley BOCES BOE. Barbara Burns, also a veteran board member, was elected vice-president and Steve Sickles took the oath of office as the newest board member. "I am honored that my school board colleagues have entrusted me with the position of board president. As president, I am simply another board member serving the district with six others. We make decisions together based on input we receive from our administration. We have an excellent board of committed folks that work together with our administration to do what is right for our staff and most importantly for the kids," Jones commented. Burns, a nine-year veteran of the school board, is one of two female members. She is a native of Cal-Mum, a graduate of CM High School and the parent of four grown children, all of which are CMCS graduates. She is proud to serve her alma mater as a school board member and now vice-president. Burns says it is the consistency of the school board that helps things operate smoothly. "I think our board is a good group. We work cohesively together for the good of the kids. When we do have differing opinions, through our discussions we are able to work through it," Burns remarked. Sickles began his first three-year term on the board that night. A lot of business is conducted at the reorganization meeting and Sickles saw how the board handles it. "I had an idea of what would happen that night but I was very impressed with how structured the meeting was. There is an awful lot to learn and I’m excited to learn more. I’m glad that I got involved," Sickles said. The board decided other annual business that night that included setting monthly board meetings for the second and fourth Tuesday of each month unless otherwise posted. Board members were appointed representatives to the following committees:
The board established tuition fees at $2,500 per year for students in grades K-6 and $2,850 per year for students in grades 7-12. The board established substitute teacher pay at:
The board accepted, with regret, the resignation of Barbara Bourcy, special education teacher. The Caledonia-Mumford Board of Education cancelled its second meeting in July and will reconvene on August 14, 2007.
