Rotary hosts exchange students for Fall Weekend
Many families opened their doors and hearts to 27 students from around the world for a weekend of getting acquainted with small town America. Twenty countries were represented by eager, intelligent, and very active teens. After arriving on Thursday evening from the towns they are staying in for the year, they quickly became involved in the plans and events for Cal-Mum. Host families arrived to pick them up and hear words of encouragement from local Rotarians before leaving for home. The students arrived very early at CMCS on Friday to set up an International Fair in the Elementary School Gymnasium. Soon the children started arriving and with them, a lot of questions: about food, types of housing, sports, movies, etc. The Exchange Students also had a chance to inquire about what goes on here in Caledonia and Mumford. It was a very satisfactory morning for all. Thanks to the Foreign Language Students of CMCS, the Exchange Students had plenty to do, relaxing and getting acquainted with the school in general and lunch in particular. After lunch the Exchange Students enjoyed a visit with Don Alhart of WHAM and Channel 13 at the studio in Henrietta. Back in Caledonia the students either visited with their host families or attended the Football game Friday night. Saturday saw the students at the Genesee Country Museum for a step back into our past. Several commented that however old our things were, theirs were much older! Roller Skating was new for many of the Exchange Students but they all tried it and many showed great skill and agility. The bonfire which followed the Skating Party was well attended and proved to be a great end to the day. Sunday was a happy/sad day as Caledonia and Mumford bid good-bye to our new friends. Many vowed to keep in touch and planned to meet again . . . soon. Cal-Mum Rotary could not do this exchange program without the cooperation of the families in our villages. We are eternally grateful for your interest and help. We just hope you enjoy the exchange of ideas and cultures as much as we enjoy doing it.
