Raiders
compete at the St. John Fisher Passing Camp
Fifteen members of the 2007 Red Raider football team traveled to the St. John Fisher campus on June 23-24 to participate in this year’s St. John Fisher’s 7 on 7 Passing Camp. The Cal-Mum contingent participated in the Small School division at the camp, which was comprised of the Raiders along with thirteen other teams from western and central New York. The Raiders played very well on the first day of the competition, compiling a 5-0 record with wins coming against Pioneer, Oakfield, Tonawanda, South Jefferson and Barker. The unblemished record on the first day of competition tied the Raiders with the team from Marcellus going into the next day’s championship bracket. The Raiders were subsequently ceded 2nd for the second day’s competition, after losing a coin flip with Marcellus. In the championship bracket, the Raiders opened with a thrilling come from behind victory over South Jefferson to move into the semi-final round. The Raiders then ran into a hot team as the traditional pass orientated East Rochester club finally halted the Raiders’ victory string by besting the Raiders. The loss effectively ended the Raider’s hopes of taking home the Passing Camp’s championship trophy. The Raiders put the loss quickly behind them as they closed out the competition with a victory over Barker. Their final victory over Barker gave the Raiders a commendable 7-1 record, good enough for a 3rd place finish in the tournament. The Raider team played well throughout the camp. Quarterback, Steve Lauffer was recognized for his fine effort when he was awarded the Camp’s Offensive MVP Award. The Raider coaching staff was pleased with the effort of not only Steve Lauffer but also were encouraged by the passing of Chris Voos and Mike Anderson. All three showed good promise for the coming season. Nick Nothnagle also proved to have a very productive camp, as a he became a favorite receiver for Lauffer’s passes. Mike Tomasso was the Raiders main man on defense as he anchored a strong Cal-Mum pass defense. Participating at the camp besides Lauffer, Nothnagle, Voos, Anderson and Tomasso were: Jordan Rogers, Nate Schiedel, James Sickles, Tim Sullivan, Brett Doran, Dave Fox, Jon Marozzi, Darryl Mitchell, Brian Sinclair and Jeremy Wilson. The Raiders are expected to begin their summer camp from July 9th through the 12th, as they take the first steps to what is hoped to be a successful 2007 football campaign.
