Jean Clancy Knapp

   Caledonia/Martha's Vineyard; Jean (Murphy) Clancy Knapp, wife of Dr. J. Walter Knapp, of Sengekontacket in Oak Bluffs, MA. died Tuesday, December 25, 2007 at her home, surrounded by family.

   Born Jean Agnes Murphy in Buffalo, NY on November 3, 1920, one of six children of Francis and Mary (Eck) Murphy, she grew up and was graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy in Buffalo, NY. Until her marriage to Francis John Clancy in 1942, she worked as a secretary for the Mayflower Moving Company, in Buffalo, NY. Jean moved with her husband to Pensacola Naval Air Station in Florida when he enlisted in the service. When he was sent to the Pacific, Jean returned to Buffalo to await his return. After the war, Mr. Clancy attended dental school and began his practice in Caledonia in 1949. Together they raised five children. Dr. Clancy passed away in 1974.

   In 1979, Jean married Walter Knapp, MD, who was also recently widowed. They lived for a short time in Penfield, NY during which time they were building their new home on Martha’s Vineyard, MA. They moved to Martha’s Vineyard in 1982.

   Jean was a parishioner of Good Shepherd Parish of Martha’s Vineyard, where she served as a lector and Eucharistic minister, along with Dr. Knapp. She enjoyed gardening, needle point, music, dancing, entertaining, and was an avid sports enthusiast. Nothing in Jean’s life meant more to her than her family, whom she showered with love and care.

   Jean is survived by her loving husband, J. Walter Knapp of Oak Bluffs, and their children from both marriages: Maureen Clancy Bernard (Joseph) of Tewksbury, MA, Timothy Clancy (Cathleen) of Clifton, NY, Kevin Clancy (Jody) of Babson Park, FL, Emmett Clancy (Antoinette) of Newport Coast, CA, Kathleen Clancy Vetter (Timothy) of Alden, NY, Martha Knapp Robinson (James) of Windsor, CT, Margaret Knapp Wadecki (Steve) of Long Lake, NY, Kathryn "Kitty" Knapp White (Timothy) of Cape Vincent, NY, Ruth Knapp Hastings (Lawrence) of East Amherst, NY, Paul Dreher of Rochester, NY, and Bernard Joseph "BJ" Knapp of Boston, MA. She also leaves thirty grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren; and a brother, George Murphy of Philadelphia, PA.

   She was predeceased by her husband’s children, James W. Knapp, Jr., Mary Elizabeth Knapp and Suzanne Knapp Dreher, and a granddaughter, Phoebe Jones Foster.

   Friends called on Sunday, December 30, from 4-7 PM at the Alhart Funeral Home, 3068 West Main Street, Caledonia. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 AM on Monday, December 31 at St. Columba's Church, North Street, Caledonia.
