Glenn J. Leathersich, 96, of Canisteo, passed away peacefully Friday, June 23, 2006 at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell, following a brief illness. Born in Caledonia, June 15, 1910, the son of Lomond and Elsie Sinclair Leathersich, he earned his bachelor's and master's degree in Business Education at Syracuse University. He also took course work at Harvard, UCLA, the University of California at Berkeley and Ohio State. He earned a letter in football at Syracuse University. Glenn taught and coached athletics at Oneonta Senior High School and taught at Alfred State College, where he was chairman of the secretarial department. He was a member of the New York State Business Teachers Association, and a member of its board of directors. In early years, Glenn was active in the 4-H organization, and in 1924, was a member of the NYS 4-H Dairy Judging Team, which competed in the National Dairy Show, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was a member of the Grange and took degrees to the national level. He was awarded a plaque for 20 years of service in the Boy Scouts of America as Scout Master and Institutional Representative. He served as Almond Town Historian, was past president of the Almond Historical Society, and an active member of the Canisteo Historical Society. He enjoyed the hobbies of photography, rock polishing, painting, woodworking, antique tool collecting, and marble and knife collecting. He gave many programs on these subjects to local organizations. After his retirement from teaching in 1973, he became well known in the area as an antique dealer. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Hornell, and served as an elder. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant, Senior Grade. He was a communications officer on the flagship of Commander of Service Squadron 10, supply headquarters for the Third and Fifth fleets in the Pacific. Before his discharge, he was assistant personnel officer at Sampson Naval Base, on the faculty of the Naval R.O.T.C. at Ohio State University and officer-in-charge of the closing of the Navy V-12 Unit at Case Institute of Applied Science at Cleveland, Ohio.

   In 1937, he married the former Frances Church in Tunkhannock, PA, who predeceased him December 25, 1997. Surviving are three sons, Peter (Linda) Leathersich, and Carl (Janice) Leathersich, both of Canisteo, and John (Suzanne) Leathersich, of Middleton, Wisconsin; one daughter, Ann (Ruben) Lugo, of Orlando, FL; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

   The family received friends from 6-9 p.m. Friday, June 30 at the Robertson Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo Street in Hornell. A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Hornell United Presbyterian Church, with Rev. David Kilgore officiating. Burial at Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellsville, NY.
