George E. Phelps II George E. Phelps II, President and CEO of Allen Bailey Tag & Label, Inc. of Caledonia, died peacefully at his Caledonia home on October 31, 2006, surrounded by his family. He was 63 years of age and had been ill only a short time, since August 2006. Phelps’ grandfather, the late George I, started the company on Lehigh Street in 1911. As a young college student attending Georgetown University, George E. Phelps II started working summers in the family business, beginning his career with Allen Bailey Tag in the shipping room in the early 1960’s. Over the years Phelps had worked in nearly every job in the company and in 1989 was named Vice-President of Sales and Marketing. He reached the pinnacle of his career five years ago when he was named CEO and a third generation president of Allen Bailey Tag and Label. The prosperous company employs over 100 loyal workers between its Caledonia and Massachusetts locations, many are second and third generation employees. The son of Richard and Bernice Phelps, George was born October 12, 1943 in Rochester. Mr. Phelps graduated from Massapequa High School, Long Island in 1961 and Georgetown University in 1965. He was a member of the Georgetown Alumni Association. Mr. Phelps served in the US Army, and was stationed in South Korea. In addition to his dedication to the family business and its employees and his devotion to his own family, Mr. Phelps enjoyed his Monday night golf league, biking and boating in his spare time. He was a member of the Livingston County Chamber of Commerce, the Five Star Bank Citizens Advisory Board, the Rochester Business Alliance, Matthew Cleary Post 255 American Legion. Mr. Phelps is survived his wife of 37 years, Barbara; daughter, Jennifer (Tom) Jones; son, George (Tina) Phelps III; grandchildren, Bronwyn, Crawford, Lawson, Miller, Ashley, Thomas, George IV; mother, Bernice (Frank) Salmiere; sisters, Janet Phelps, Jennifer (Michael) Chapman, Laurie (David) Beardsley; brother, Richard (Lynne) Phelps; sister-in-law, Nancy (Bill) Plews; brothers-in-law, Charlie (Pamela) Chiverton, Robert (Gretchen) Chiverton; several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his father Richard G. Phelps. Friends were invited to call Sunday, November 5 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Alhart Funeral Home, 3068 W. Main Street, Caledonia. A funeral Mass was held Monday, November 6 at 11:00 AM at St. Columba Church, North Street, Caledonia. Private Interment. Memorials may be made to Livingston County Hospice, 2 County Campus, Mt.
