Floyd Samuel Eberts Jr. PhD Floyd Samuel Eberts Jr. of Kalamazoo, MI and formerly from Caledonia was born on December 24, 1924 and went to the hunting fields and trout streams of Heaven on March 10, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer. Surviving are his life partner of 19 years, Phyllis A. Thayer of Kalamazoo; children, Lynn (Rod) Fagerman and grandchildren, Jenna and Sarah of Grand Rapids; F. Samuel (Angela) Eberts III and grandchildren, Jackson and Grace of Chapel Hill, NC; a brother, Arthur Eberts and his partner, Lori Spagnola of Caledonia, NY; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, June; his sister, Marion Johnson; and his parents. Floyd was part of "The Greatest Generation". He served his country in World War II, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge with the 104th Infantry, 26th (Yankee) Division and as a Prisoner of War in Germany. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the flagpole in his front yard was a constant reminder of his pride in this country and all the men and women who have served it. Floyd graduated from Caledonia High School in 1942 and from Penn State in 1948, with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. Floyd was active in the Delta Chi fraternity and he remained a loyal Penn State football fan throughout his life. He was awarded his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin in 1952. Although he had many talents; as a scientist, his passion was always for the scientific process. Floyd was a Senior Research Scientist with the Upjohn Company for 34 years, specializing in Drug Metabolism Research, playing a major role in the development of Xanax and Halcion until his retirement in 1987. During his career, he was an active member of Sigma Xi, the American Chemical Society, and the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. Floyd was active in the Suburban Lions Club (Charter President), and was an adult leader with the Boy Scouts, Troop 256. He saw his son receive the Eagle Scout award. During his retirement years, he was able to fully enjoy his hobbies of hunting, fishing, and dog training. He was a Field Judge for the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA). Floyd was also an active member of the North American Deutcsh Kurzhaar Club (NADKC), Scientific Anglers, Trout Unlimited, Ruffed Grouse Society, and several sporting gun clubs. Floyd was loved by his children and grandchildren and was a loyal friend. He touched many people's lives in unique ways. His dry sense of humor, sharp wit and commitment to his values will never be forgotten. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service was held at Saint Luke's Church on April 21, 2007 at 11 AM. His remains were buried at Ft. Custer. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to St. Luke's Church, 247 West Lovell Street, Kalamazoo, Michigan 49007.
