Ernest W. Walkup

            Ernest W. Walkup, age 89 years, of Caledonia passed away peacefully November 15, 2005 at his home. He was born December 5, 1915 in Sherborn, MA to Chester and Agnes Walkup. Ernest retired from Itek Corporation in 1980 as a service technician where he was honored for his work on government machines. After retirement, Ernest continued his love of travel, visiting 68 countries, many Canadian provinces, all the United States, and Mexico. Throughout his travels, Ernest captured the images he saw with photography. He also had a strong interest in history spurred by his travels. He searched for family genealogy. He had a great love of reading and upholding family traditions and values. Ernest spent many hours in his garden finding the perfect location for his perennials and planting enough vegetables for his family. His choices for planting often attracted birds and butterflies. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served 1 term as trustee and 3 terms as deacon. He was on the town board of assessment. Ernest served in WWII and was a member of the National Guard. King Ernie and Queen Arline received their crowns of the National Campers & Hikers Association for many years. Ernest is survived by his wife of 63 years, Arline; children, Laurence (Remy) Walkup of Washington State, Shirley (Greg) Strobel of Tocoa, GA, Sharon (James) Shelby of LeRoy, Kenneth Walkup of Ithaca, Lucille (Larry) Tobin of Woodbury, CT; 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; sister Berta Oliver of Pittsfield, ME; several nieces and nephews.

            Friends attended his Memorial Service, Saturday, 3:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church, 3080 Main Street, Caledonia. A private interment at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Garden. Arrangements made by Alhart Funeral Home.
