Arline R. Walkup Arline R. Walkup, age 91 years, of Caledonia passed away peacefully after a brief illness on April 25, 2009. Mrs. Walkup was born in Unity, Maine on June 18, 1917. She attended Beverly (MA) High School and was Valedictorian of her class at Salem State Teachers College. She began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Madison, NH and taught second grade for many years at Caledonia-Mumford Central School. She had a life-long interest and devotion to all things in nature and eagerly shared her knowledge of the world. She and her husband of 63 years, the late Ernest W. Walkup, were avid travelers, having been all over the world and in every US state. She often quoted the phrase "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without" and she lived with a frugality born in the depression era. But her generosity of spirit extended to all who knew her, especially her family. At age 89 she wrote a collection of short autobiographical stories, "Grandma Remembers", which brought the days of the depression to life for her friends and family. In addition to her husband, Ernest, she was predeceased by her parents, Ralph E. and Pearl M. Reynolds, brother, Ralph C. (Ada) Reynolds, and sister Mildred (Joseph) McCarthy. Arline is survived by her sister Evelyn (Charles) Moser of Holland, Michigan, brother Charles O. (Barbara) Reynolds of Peabody, MA; children Laurence (Remy) Walkup of Pasco, WA, Shirley (Gregory) Strobel of Toccoa, GA, Sharon (James) Shelby of LeRoy, NY, Kenneth Walkup of Ithaca, NY and Lucille (Larry) Tobin of Meriden, CT: 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren: many nieces and nephews and her dear neighbors, Jane Passamonte and Merl Galusha of Caledonia. Friends attended her Memorial Service, 3:00 PM Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at the First Presbyterian Church, 3080 West Main Street, Caledonia, NY 14423. Private Interment. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Garden. Arrangements made by Alhart Funeral Home, 3068 West Main Street, Caledonia.
