2008 Cal-Mum Music Hall of Fame inductees

Three new members were added to the Cal-Mum Music Hall of Fame this year. Charles Banks and posthumously, James and Geraldine Ball, were recognized for their musical contributions and formally inducted to the Music Hall of Fame at the spring choral and band concert held May 9, 2008. Choral Director Todd Walker and Band Director Matt Trost made the presentations.

James played trumpet in the Caledonia school band. After his graduation from Caledonia High School in 1937, he attended the Eastman School of Music but had his education interrupted by service in World War II. After returning from the war in Europe, Jim completed his education, earning a master's degree in 1947. He taught piano at Washington State University in St. Louis, MO and Memphis State University. In the 1960's Jim began teaching at the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam but would come home every year to enjoy summers with his family here in Caledonia. He retired in 1982 and spent many hours playing the piano in his studio. Jim died in 1987.

Younger sister, Geraldine Ball, was very unique in that she played percussion in the Caledonia High School band at a time when percussionists were primarily male. Geraldine was a member of the Music Club and played piano with a local group called the Hep Cats, organized by Charles Banks of Mumford, also a Hall of Fame inductee. An accomplished pianist, Geraldine accompanied the high school choir and after graduation from Caledonia High School in 1940, she earned a bachelor of music degree from the Eastman School of Music. She played marimba with the Houston Symphony Orchestra for a time before returning to Caledonia in the 1950's to take a position at the Hilton Central School as a music teacher. Geraldine gave piano lessons to many children in the Caledonia area prior to passing away in 1996.

Charles Banks made his musical mark while a student at Caledonia High School. He played clarinet and saxophone in the band and orchestra was president of the Music Club. Charles organized a jazz band called the Hep Cats which played for school and community events. While serving in the U.S. Army, he played in the 327th Army Band and also played organ for the chaplain. After his discharge from the military, Charles played with the Mercer Ellington Band and the Gerald Wilson Band in Los Angeles before returning to the Rochester area where he completed his undergraduate work at the University of Rochester and earned a master's degree in public administration. He's been organist at the Second Baptist Church in Mumford and conducted several interdenominational and interracial choral groups in Rochester and Buffalo and was a vocalist with the Rochester Oratorio Society. Charles says music continues to be an important part of his life.
