Mumford Fire District approves $1.4 million project Voters in the Mumford Fire District approved a $1.44 million renovation and building project on August 25, 2005. The Mumford Board of Fire Commissioners worked over the past couple of years to prepare a fiscally responsible project that would fit the needs of the fire department. The Mumford Fire District applied $60,000 from their capital reserve fund to the cost of the project, bonding the remaining $1.38 million. A $100,000 home in the district will see an additional $90 in next year’s fire tax above their 2005 bill. Fire Commissioner Don Whiteside says the modern day fire trucks are much larger than the trucks of 1958 when the current fire hall was built. The tight fit of the current fire hall has impacted response time and firefighter safety, Whiteside said. The new and larger facility will also be used to conduct more firefighter training. The main points of the project include tearing down the north portion of the community building (the stage area) and building a new five bay attached truck room, renovation of the existing community building (upstairs), new restrooms, adding a larger kitchen and additional offices and conference room for officers and commissioners, and a media room for the fire department. The project will go out for bid late this year and work should begin in the spring 2006. |
