Fire Departments host open house

October was fire prevention month and both Caledonia and Mumford Fire Departments hosted open houses featuring special events for the public.

Mumford FD unveiled for the first time its antique fire equipment museum, built by the fire department with volunteer manpower and generous donations.

The building, located next to the newly renovated fire hall on Main Street in Mumford, houses the collection of original firefighting equipment including circa 1800’s hand pumper, hose cart and ladder truck. Mumford Fire Department organized in 1887.

Todd Smith, organizer of the open house, said the antique museum has been a work in progress for more than two years. Many people toured the building as the doors were opened for the first time.

Caledonia FD displayed their equipment in front of the Main Street fire hall. The kids received play fire helmets and enjoyed the opportunity to sit behind the wheel of the big fire engines. Fire prevention and education literature, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors were available to residents.
