When there's a call for help, they respond. They're fast, they're trained and many times they're community volunteers, most of all, they care. The ambulance corps’ of Livingston County offer a wide range of opportunities for volunteers who are interested in learning emergency medical treatment, helping others, and providing a critical community service. The emergency medical services (EMS) provided by these ambulance corps involves the work of volunteers and paid staff who are: first responders, ambulance drivers, emergency medical technicians (EMT’s), advanced life support (ALS) technicians and people who have administrative or clerical skills. When a serious injury or illness occurs, a family member, friend or co-worker may seek emergency medical services (EMS) by dialing 911. The dispatcher then notifies EMS team members of the emergency, keeps them in contact with each other, and assists with communication with the hospital. The ambulance crew includes the ambulance driver, who has been instructed in correct driving techniques under various transport situations. Also EMT’s of various levels of training, treat the injury or illness, and care for the patient in the ambulance at the emergency scene and while on the way to the hospital. EMT’s are trained to provide basic life support, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, oxygen therapy, bleeding control, treatment for shock, spinal and fracture protection, and emergency childbirth. Behind-the-scenes EMS team members often include persons skilled in clerical and administrative tasks, supply and record duties, and various other non-technical positions. Please note, there are many jobs which don’t require medical training and are ideal for business persons, etc. All of these services are provided by dedicated and skilled volunteers, often at great sacrifice to themselves and their families because of their concern for the well-being of their community. Volunteers are always needed by the all ambulance corps. Persons, who are at least 18 years of age and are interested in volunteering, please call Livingston County Emergency Management Services, EMS Coordinator Bill Sheahan at (585) 243-7596. |
