Caledonia Library Association requests funding support
to shore up budget deficit

Caledonia Library Association is hoping that the Town and Village of Caledonia will restore the full funding requested of the municipalities and help reduce a growing budget deficit that they have been facing since 2002.

As an Association Library and member of the Pioneer Library System, Caledonia relies on the town and village for the majority of its annual revenue. The Library Board makes its funding request annually to the two municipalities, but with no guarantee of receiving the requested amount. Beginning in 2005, both the Town and Village responded with less than the amount of funding requested by the Library Board.

Village Mayor Joe Caluorie says library funding will be included in their upcoming 2007-2008 budget workshops this spring. Over the past two years, the Library Board has increased their requested funding by $4.000 to cover increases levied by the PLS, computer fees and cost of living salary increases. Library Board President Kathleen Brown says it was necessary to increase the requested funding in order to close a $25,000 - $32,000 budget deficit.

In 2006, the Caledonia and Mumford Libraries requested that the CMCS Board of Education pass a resolution to collect $30,000 in revenue (added to the school tax bill) to be equally split between the two libraries. Caledonia Library received their portion of this funding in November 2006 after school taxes were collected, reducing the anticipated 2007 deficit to $17,000.

In a survey conducted last year, respondents spoke loud and clear in support of the library, with 326 respondents agreeing that a public library is a necessity for a community. Caledonia Library is a vital part of the community, hosting 24 story times for children each year, a summer reading program, providing books on tape/cd, Wi-fi access and use of the Internet.

In addition, Caledonia Library work with and supplements Cal-Mum Elementary School programs like Page Turners and the Summer Reading Program. Caledonia Library lent 231,394 books to its 1,200 patrons last year.

Caledonia Library Association is looking to the future with expectations of expanding its video library, creating a music lending collection, adding a computer to the Children's Room and continuing its commitment to ensuring that the nonfiction collection stays up to date with current and accurate information.

The Caledonia Library Association is also eagerly awaiting finalization for the historically significant Main Street building housing the library to receive National Landmark status.

The beautiful and historically significant Caledonia Library, located on Main Street, is being considered for National Landmark status.
