American Legion Post thanks Principal Tom Woodruff

Boys’ State Chairperson for the Matthew Cleary Post 255 American Legion, Jake Davis, says the program is successful in Caledonia-Mumford and he credits much of that to Cal-Mum High School Principal Thomas Woodruff. On March 9, 2008, Davis presented Woodruff with a certificate of appreciation from the local American Legion post, to recognize his efforts.

"In recognition and sincere appreciation of his outstanding service and assistance which contributed to the advancement of the American Legion programs and activities dedicated to God and Country."

Each year, upon request, Woodruff arranges for Davis to come in to the school to speak with boys who are interested in attending Boys’ State, a week-long leadership action program covering aspects of government, citizenship and character. Candidates are selected based on the following criteria:

  • Leadership
  • Ability to get along with others
  • Physical cleanliness and neatness
  • Honest
  • Good personality and vigorous attitude
  • Enthusiasm
  • Good citizenship

The Matthew Cleary Post is fortunate to have several young men interested in attending the program, held each June on the campus of SUNY Morrisville. Davis said that some of his fellow Boys’ State organizers do not experience the same level of cooperation and he wanted to recognize Woodruff for his efforts.

"The American Legion Boys' State is an outstanding program that teaches young men the values of teamwork, leadership, and citizenship. For many participants this is a once in a lifetime experience," Woodruff said.
