Neighbors responding to the community’s EMS needs Genesee Valley Emergency Medical Services (GVEMS), the newly formed corporation comprised of Caledonia Ambulance and Medic 77 Advanced Life Support, says the not-for-profit organization is off to a good start. In 2003, they hope to continue their effectiveness within the community, and even build on it, as they seek to increase membership. Caledonia Ambulance, along with Medic 77 ALS, formed this new relationship late in 2002, separating from the Caledonia Fire Department, so that it could continue to serve the residents of the Cal-Mum community, with some minor changes to its structure. Caledonia Ambulance continues to be a locally administered volunteer emergency medical service provider. Because of its relationship to Medic 77, there is a paid (contract staffed) paramedic available during its Tuesday through Friday daytime hours. Ambulance workers say this move was made to improve daytime response times, when volunteer manpower was critically low. Saturday, Sunday, Monday and all evenings (Tues. – Fri.) continue to be covered by ambulance volunteers from the community, with the exception of a few new paramedics, the familiar faces of the ambulance workers remain the same. Another change is that the patients’ insurance companies can now be charged for the transport. Revenue from these charges help to support the salaries of the Caledonia Ambulance paid paramedics. Spokespeople for GVEMS say they are pleased to be able to continue the same friendly, personal and professional EMS services to the Cal-Mum community that they have come to depend on. The Caledonia Ambulance Service enjoyed over 60 years of uncompromised success due the dedication of its volunteers and a supportive community. Those same standards are what will keep Caledonia Ambulance and Medic 77 viable services here. There are many ways for interested members of the community to help ensure the continued success of Caledonia Ambulance. Keep in mind that many of these areas require only a small commitment of time. Here is just a small list of ways you can help by becoming a volunteer of Caledonia Ambulance and/or Medic 77.
In the near future, GVEMS will have a webpage located within cal-mum.com (it’s started). The page will feature more in depth information about Caledonia Ambulance and Medic 77, and how you can support your hometown EMS service. In addition, CAD Data Systems of Pittsford, N.Y. provides to the members an online duty calendar allowing them to sign up for ambulance and Medic 77 shifts from home. Think green, spring is here, and so are the GVEMS green lights! Soon all Caledonia Ambulance and Medic 77 volunteers will have green lights on their vehicles. Volunteers will turn their green lights on when they are on route to an EMS call to alert motorists to pull over and let the vehicle by. Local volunteer firefighters, as in the past, will use blue lights.
