Caledonia Fire Prevention hosts fire hall open house

Lots of families visited the Caledonia fire house on Sunday, October 14 for the annual Fire Prevention Open House. The Fire Prevention team makes this a fun but educational experience for children and their parents.

Fire helmets, coloring books, t-shirts, free smoke detectors and hotdogs were all a part of the event. The biggest thrills for kids was climbing into the driver’s seat of the big red fire trucks and spraying the heavy water hose.

Everyone had an opportunity to try on the firefighter’s turnout gear, even the News reporter tried on the outfit and quickly decided the gear was way too heavy and decided to stick with words.

The Fire Prevention team provided plenty of fun but their message was serious. They spent a week at Cal-Mum Elementary School bringing their fire safety education program to all of the students, from kindergarten through fifth grade.

Kindergartener Joey Larsen, winner of the Fire Prevention coloring contest, enjoyed a ride to school on a fire truck! More importantly Joey said he learned to "stay low and go," if he is ever in a smoke filled room.

Caledonia FD Captain Al Wilson heads the Caledonia Fire Prevention efforts for this and other events throughout the year to keep the fire safety information in the minds of everyone.

Three year old Nick gets behind the wheel of a Caledonia fire truck. He really likes the fire helmet he received at the Fire Prevention open house.

Two year old Colin looks good in his turnout gear and may, someday, become an active firefighter just his grandfather, Jim Dutton.

Joey, winner of the fire prevention coloring contest, tells Captain Al Wilson that he remembers, "stay low and go," if he is ever in a smoke filled room.

Just for ransom money some day! I was thinking I could become an embedded reporter with NYFD, but I couldn’t move after putting all this on! Forget it!
