When Amanda Wilson submitted her fire safety colored poster to her teacher, Mrs. Pecora, at Cal-Mum Elementary School, she never dreamed it would appear on a huge billboard in Caledonia. October is Fire Prevention month. To spread the message of fire safety, all elementary students were invited to color a poster with the fire safety and prevention theme. A faculty team selected one student’s poster from each grade level (no names included) and those students got to ride to school on a real fire truck. Of the posters selected, the team selected one poster to be enlarged and used on the billboard on West Main Road, as you enter Caledonia from the west. Amanda is that lucky student. Be sure to take a look at her creative message about fire safety and prevention the next time you drive back into town from the west.

Fire Hall Open House draws crowd Lieutenant Al Wilson of the Caledonia Fire Department couldn’t have been more pleased with the turn out at the annual Open House for Fire Prevention awareness. A cool but sunny day allowed dozens of youngsters time to climb on the fire equipment, visit with Sparky, enjoy a hot dog and popcorn, and watch a fire prevention movie. There were fireman hats for the kids too! The firefighters performed several demonstrations, all with the intent of showing families just how easy a fire can get started, and how easy it is to prevent them from starting. The firefighters demonstrated a vehicle/victim extrication, showing how they put their training to work saving lives. Life saving smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors were given away as well. Caledonia and Mumford Fire Departments teamed up to present this afternoon’s activities. Both fire companies are volunteer companies and are dependent in part on the generosity of the communities they serve. Remember to thank them for all they do with a donation when you can.

Youngster's fire prevention poster to appear on billboard October is Fire Prevention month and the Caledonia and Mumford Fire Departments have many fun activities planned that are aimed at educating the public in fire safety. On Sunday, October 15th Caledonia and Mumford FDs will host an afternoon of fun and education at the Caledonia Fire Hall Open House from noon until 4 p.m. There will be an opportunity for children to climb into the cab of a real fire truck, plenty of giveaways, a vehicle extrication drill, food and refreshments. Earlier this month, Caledonia FD sponsored a fire safety poster-coloring contest at Cal-Mum Elementary School. One winner from each grade level will get a ride to school on a fire truck and a complimentary tee shirt. The elementary faculty selected an overall winner to have their fire safety-coloring poster appear on a billboard located on Route 5 west as you exit the Village of Caledonia. That lucky child was fifth grader Amanda Wilson of Caledonia. Look for Amanda's poster the next time you drive west on Main Street out of town. Amanda and all of the other grade level poster-coloring winners will be recognized at the open house.
