Caledonia Fire Department community appeal The Caledonia Fire Department is proud of its 119 year history of fire protection readiness and response to the Caledonia community. Maintaining a high quality volunteer fire department is a challenge these days, both in terms of maintaining active membership and financial solvency. Residents in the Caledonia Fire District recently received the second annual community appeal, asking them to consider a financial donation to the fire department and also inviting residents to consider joining the department. The community appeal by mail is the department’s main source of revenue along with weekly bingo at J.W. Jones Hall. Both of these fundraisers replace the firemen’s carnival that was discontinued several years ago. Fire Chief Bob Beisang says the fundraiser supports many areas in the department. "It supports things like uniforms, refreshments at emergencies and drills, dinner meetings, picnics and our own philanthropy. The mailed fund drive is also important to the livelihood of J.W. Jones Hall, which is a great FD and community asset, but every day tougher to support. The members need some benefit just to say "thanks for your efforts" and J.W. Jones Hall gives us a place to meet and socialize," Beisang explained. In addition to department operations, CFD provides many other valuable community resources such as:
Beisang says while donations are always appreciated, recruiting new members and providing the necessary state-mandated training is by far the most pressing issue of the department. CFD has about 90 active members and would encourage anyone interested to explore volunteer membership "There is no greater feeling than knowing you helped a neighbor in their time of need," Beisang commented. For more information, please feel free to contact the fire chief at 538-6130 or President Tom Sims at 538-4626. Donations may be mailed to PO Box 1, Caledonia, NY 14423.
