Construction
underway on the new Avon-Caledonia Bridge The Genesee River Bridge that separates Avon from Caledonia on Routes 5 & 20 is currently being replaced. The present four-lane bridge that was constructed in 1933 has had the two outer lanes blocked off for several years due to weight safety regulations on the aging structure. When this project is complete, a new two-lane bridge will replace the existing truss bridge spanning the river. It is being built to the north of the existing alignment with steel girders and a concrete deck. There will be wide shoulders to accommodate bicyclists and pedestrians. During construction, the existing bridge will remain open while the new one is built, eliminating the need for a lengthy detour. In addition to the infrastructure work, a car top boat launch and a parking area will be built to access to the Genesee River on the south side of the new highway. The $3,074,534.86 project is expected to be completed by July 31, 2004. The contractor for both the bridge and the new roadwork is A. L. Blades & Sons from Hornell, NY. click on photos below to enlarge …
