7TH GRADE HOOPS WIN
WINTER CLASSIC TOURNAMENT

   The Cal-Mum 7th grade boys travel basketball team participated in the CYP Winter Classic Basketball Tournament held at St. John Fisher College on February 22-25. The team went 5-0 to win their respective 7th grade division. The Cal-Mum boys were matched up with Greece #1, Greece #2, Webster, Wayne and McQuaid in their respective bracket.

   In game one, Cal-Mum was matched up with the Wayne Eagles and came out on top 53-42. A 16-6 second quarter run would put Cal-Mum on top 35-22 at the half, and they would hold on for the 11 point win. Cal-Mum was led by Steve Gaffney with 20 points including 3 three-pointers, Kyle Kline with 14 points, Madison Suhr with 7 points, and Justin Wade with 5 points. Brady Sass added a 3-pointer, and Matt Hayes and Terry James each chipped in with 2 points.

   In game two, Cal-Mum was matched up with Greece #1 and came away with a hard fought 47-41 victory. Greece jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead, but Cal-Mum would end the first quarter on a 13-4 run to take the lead. Cal-Mum would lead by as many as 12 points in the second half, and held off a late Greece charge to earn the 6 point win. Leading the charge for Cal-Mum were Steve Gaffney with 23 points including 1 three-pointer, Kyle Kline with 10 points, Justin Wade with 7 points, Madison Suhr with 5 points including 1 three-pointer, and Matt Hayes with 2 points.

   In game three, Cal-Mum was matched up with Webster/North Coast and came away with a 47-37 victory. Cal-Mum jumped out to 19-7 first quarter lead and never looked back. Cal-Mum was led by Steve Gaffney with 21 points including 1 three-pointer, and Kyle Kline with 8 points.  Brady Sass and Madison Suhr each added 5 points including 1 three-pointer each, and Justin Wade and Matt Hayes each chipped in with 4 points.

   In game four, Cal-Mum was matched up with Greece #2 and came out on top 51-38. Cal-Mum led throughout the entire game by as many as 18 points as they cruised into the championship game with a 4-0 record.  Leading Cal-Mum were Steve Gaffney with 21 points, Madison Suhr with 12 points, Kyle Kline with 6 points, and Brady Sass with 6 points on 2 three-pointers. Justin Wade and Matt Hayes each added 3 points.

   In the championship game, Cal-Mum was matched up again with Greece #1. Greece would take the early lead 13-10 after the first quarter. The second quarter belonged to Cal-Mum though as they would take a 24-21 lead into halftime. Greece would then outscore Cal-Mum 14-6 in the third quarter to take a 35-30 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The teams would trade buckets throughout the fourth quarter with Greece still leading by 6 points with under 3 minutes to play. Cal-Mum would close the game on a 12-2 run though to capture the championship with a hard fought 51-47 victory. Cal-Mum was led by Steve Gaffney with 23 points including 3 three-pointers, Madison Suhr with 10 points, Kyle Kline with 8 points, Brady Sass with 7 points including 1 three-pointer, and Matt Hayes with 3 points. Defensively, Terry James, Matt Hayes and Kyle Kline each had double digit rebounds to control the boards for Cal-Mum.

CLASSIC TOURNAMENT

 

   The Cal-Mum 7th grade boys travel basketball team participated in the CYP Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament held at St. John Fisher College over the holiday break.  The team went 4-0 to win their respective 7th grade division.  The Cal-Mum boys were matched up with Webster, Honeoye Halls Lima, and Wayne in their respective bracket.

   In game one, Cal-Mum was matched up with the Wayne Eagles and came out on top 44-40.  Cal-Mum led throughout the entire game by as many as 10 points until a late charge by Wayne made the final score close.  Cal-Mum was led by Steve Gaffney with 22 points including 3 three-pointers, and Madison Suhr with 12 points.  Justin Wade chipped in with 4 points, while Kyle Kline, Alex Hall and Matt Hayes each had 2 points.

   In game two, Cal-Mum was matched up with Honeoye Falls Lima and came out on top 48-31.  Cal-Mum jumped out to a quick 17-2 lead after the first 3 minutes and never looked back.  Leading the charge for Cal-Mum were Steve Gaffney with 15 points including 1 three-pointer, Madison Suhr with 12 points, Kyle Kline with 8 points and Brady Sass with 6 points including 2 three-pointers.  Justin Wade added 3 points and Alex Hall and Matt Hayes each contributed with 2 points.

   In game three, Cal-Mum was matched up with Webster/North Coast and came away with a convincing 43-18 victory.  A 21-4 second quarter run would put the game away early for Cal-Mum and send them to the championship game.  Cal-Mum was led by Steve Gaffney with 13 points including 3 three-pointers, Madison Suhr with 8 points, Ian Hall with 7 points and Kyle Kline with 5 points.  Alex Coleman chipped in with 4 points, and Brady Sass and Justin Wade contributed with 3 points each.

   In the championship game, Cal-Mum was matched up again with Webster/North Coast based on the round robin format used for the tournament.  This game however would not be as easy for the Cal-Mum boys as Webster came out firing.  Webster led by as many as 14 points midway through the second quarter until a late Cal-Mum charge would cut the lead to 8 points at halftime.  The third quarter would see Cal-Mum outscore Webster 12-9 to cut the lead to 5 points after three quarters.  In the fourth quarter, Cal-Mum’s full court press proved too much for Webster as the Raiders would outscore Webster 21-15 in the final quarter to claim the championship with a close and hard fought 54-53 victory.  Madison Suhr led Cal-Mum in scoring with 21 points, followed by Kyle Kline with 14 points, Steve Gaffney with 9 points, Ian Hall with 6 points, and Alex Coleman with 4 points.  At the conclusion of the tournament, each of the Cal-Mum boys was presented with a trophy.

   This tournament concluded a series of 4 tournaments totaling 16 games that the Cal-Mum 7th grade boys travel basketball team participated in against primarily Monroe County teams over the past two months.  The boys went a very respectable 8-8 in these games playing against teams from Pittsford, Greece, East Rochester, Webster, McQuaid, Penfield, Wayne and HFL.  5 of their 8 losses were by 6 points or less.  Offensively for the 16 games, Cal-Mum averaged nearly 44 points a game.  Leading Cal-Mum in scoring were Steve Gaffney with 261 points including a team leading 33 three-pointers, Madison Suhr with 135 points, Kyle Kline with 85 points, Justin Wade with 65 points, Brady Sass with 51 points including 9 three-pointers, Alex Coleman with 33 points, Ian Hall with 26 points, Alex Hall with 16 points, Chris Balonek with 12 points and Matt Hayes with 6 points.  The team is coached by Tim Gaffney and Jim Nelson.
